How to Start a LESSON with students

How to introduce a lesson to make allow students to discover the learning, rather than tell them the WALT and S:C

Very helpful and more engaging for our students - a problem solving approach that invites students to discover, imitate, ...

Remember to scaffold the process------ After one time it will still be fragile..... it takes time and practice for students to embed this earning..

“Over the year we have been writing some memoir pieces and have used other memoirists to help us get better at it. Today we will be reading a memoir by Gavin Bishop and we will see what he can teach us about memoir writing. He uses some pretty interesting punctuation in here. We are going to find it, and work out why he chooses to use this particular punctuation in this particular text. How does it help the effectiveness of his writing? It might help us make decisions in our own writing – let’s see.”

PD - Andrea Millar - IB CONCEPTUAL LEARNING

IB Concepts: Session one

It's good to know the content
It is great to know the pedagogy
It is imperative to know the students

What evidence do we have that learners are valued?

Activity: Engaging in ideas.

What's Knowledge Building?
It is giving them knowledge or tools to gain knowledge.

---

Shouldn't do the same units year after year. Need to review: more engaging? more relevant?

Need some delight in not knowing what is going to happen next. Alter related concepts. Teachers need to be engaged in this. Students will bring learning.

How is my learning space unique?

Kids explore environment through exploration. Help them explore. Binoculas. Luxory of exploration.

What are students doing in an inquiry classroom?

If you have 'got them', they will achieve. Read because you want to read. Hook their interest.

IB Concepts: Session two

Motivation!

(Shane Day) First term. Train them Connect to emotion. Measurement What is your connection? Do by example. Who has been sad?

Include everyone's interests.

Take advantage of learning! Self-inflicted business. What is happening around you? Take a hold of the learning rather than leave it.

-----

Primary sources.

Go to a book: inquiry for information
Need to do inquiry for meaning.

Kids like: trendy, dialect,

Ralston Elementary
We go far above what the curriculum asks.

Math is everywhere. We need it for everything.

What are we aiming for? Build up to that (eg, te reo Maaori summative)

We have children that are frighten to take a risk. They need courage.

The greatest enemy to understanding is coverage. - Howard

----

Related concepts are keen!

Which are concepts? Which is facts?

Concepts:

Build on prior knowledge. Very important! (Not just a KWL)
Think of it different. Starting to tap into it the second week.

Provocation timing. Beginning of a learning process.

Review previous units that may not have caught on. Why would a student be interested in learning about this?

Topic - something from currculum
Ask - What is the purpose? why is it compelling, significant, intriuing
Understanding goals - students will understand by the end of the unit.
Selecting concepts (related) - what concepts are the focus for the unit?
Conceptual Understanding - include where appropriate some of the concepts you have chosen. A statement.

IB Concepts: Session Three

Conceptual Understanding:
Conflict is a part of life and how we perceive and manage it has an impact.

Selecting Concepts:
Relationships, Perspective, Resolution, Managing Self, Accountability

Understanding Goals:
  1. Conflict happens
  2. The way people deal with conflict has an impact (resolving conflict)
  3. People perceive and react to conflict in different ways

Ask: Encounter conflict daily (home, school, social) Significant? ✔ Compelling? ✔ Intriguing? ✔
Topic: Conflict
----------------
Conflict could have many areas. Don't narrow it down. Conflict of living things. Using the environment. Water conflicts in New Zealand.
Try not to mix units.

------

Inquiry as provocation.
Igniting Concepts

Students are achieve learners.
